Located on a quiet lane in Amagansett, Long Island, this 1960s single-family house was an exercise in spatial economy. The challenge was to remodel its 2,800 square feet without expanding the footprint, while both respecting the house's scale in the context of neighboring homes and retaining its barn-like feel.

Simple farmhouse-styled wood shingles with accents of shiplap siding were painted white, evoking a stylized Americana, and it was capped under a cedar shingle roof.

We eliminated much of the building's circulation space and rearranged the interior layout to accommodate a more substantial program.

The program includes spacious areas for cooking, dining and entertaining.

The program affords room for gathering and relaxing both indoors and outdoors including a front porch, dining porch, leafy side patio, and a second-story sun deck off the master bedroom.

Included in the program are five modern bedroom suites.

Each bedroom has its own private bath.

A detached garage, linked to the house by a simple breezeway, features an outdoor shower and dressing area on its rear wall, just steps from a heated gunite pool.
