For this house, designed as a summer rental, the key was to select furnishings and fabrics that were durable, washable, and not too precious. We devised an interiors plan based on Feng Shui principles, consulting the Ba Tsu charts (Chinese Natal charts) of the owners, and mixed yard sale finds with antiques and mid-century modern pieces, customizing upholstered headboards and ready-made drapery panels to lend it an understated elegance.

For the color palette, we chose colors consistent with the Feng Shui plan, generous allotments of black and red for example, and took inspiration from the crisp colors that occur in the natural environment surrounding the house, such as a sprawling Japanese maple and straw-colored grasses. The bedrooms were decorated in specific color schemes to facilitate room assignments for visiting guests as well as to expedite the laundry process.
